As a former gymnast, I was initially attracted to yoga to maintain flexibility and strength. About Vinyasa Yoga

Vinyasa is literally translated from Sanskrit as meaning “connection”. In terms of yoga asana (“asana” refers to poses), we can interpret this as a connection between movement and breath. Vinyasa Yoga is a series of poses that will move you through the power of inhaling and exhaling. Vinyasa movements are smoothly flowing and almost dance-like, which explains why it is sometimes referred to as Vinyasa Flow or just Flow. The practice itself is often considered a “moving meditation”.

Vinyasa Yoga is really best described as freestyle Ashtanga, meaning that it draws heavily upon the Ashtanga tradition, but it does not adhere to the rigid structure or rules set out by K. Pattabhi Jois.

Like all styles of yoga, Vinyasa has both mental and physical benefits. Physically, sweat expels toxins and re-energises your body. Mentally, the synchronised breathing relaxes your mind and helps to release any blockage of energy flow throughout your body.
